Description: Vitobha, also known as Vitthala or Panduranga, is an avatar of Vishnu, worshipped in Pandharpur, an important Vaishnavite shrine in Maharashtra. In this Tanjore version, young Vitobha is seen in his classical pose, standing with his hands on his hips. This beautifully adorned Vitobha is framed by an intricately worked archway and platform. He is dressed in the typical yellow lower garment, adorned with jewels from head to toe and wears a gentle smile. The rich ornamentation with gold foil and bright semiprecious stones make this a striking composition in the classical Tanjore painting style. This intricate painting style, which is now GI tagged, originated in the 1600s under the patronage of the Maratha Nayaks in Thanjavur.
