Description: This Sri Rama Patabhishekam painting depicts one of the most widely represented scenes from the epic Ramayana, the coronation of Lord Rama as the king of Ayodhya, after his 14-year long exile. Lord Rama is seated on a golden throne under a bejewelled mandapam and is surrounded by his brothers, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna, who attend to him lovingly. Sita is seated beside Rama and at his feet is Hanuman. The event is attended by sages, courtiers, and the vanar sena (monkey army). This beautifully detailed composition is a truly a collector's item.
This composition follows the Tanjore tradition of the main figure being the largest and the rest of the figures are progressively smaller in order of their importance. The artist has offset the heaviness of busy scene with a light cloudy sky.
